KOrt Tower lamp

Project Date: 12/24

The Kort Tower lamp was a second iteration of a lighting project given to me early on in my Product Design program. This final version emerged from a future client seeing the result of said project, enjoying my work and believing in my ability to expand on a prototype.

I refined the fabrication process and implemented new joinery solutions which eliminated the visible box joints the original lamp included. In addition to new fabrication methods, I also chose to elevate the design by using hardwoods such as red and white oak, rather than the original choice of baltic birch ply.

The alternating vertical slats stand 24” tall and create a rhythmic pattern that allows for beautiful shadows to be cast through the cotton shade. The shade diffuses the light to create a warm, ambient glow that will transform any space.

A hollow oak base allows the lamp to remain light weight and easy to move, while providing structure for the vertical shade and lighting components inside.

Process…

It all started with being asked to play around with different methods of manipulating light, so using corrugated plastic, cardboard and anything else I could get my hands on I began to explore refraction, diffusion and reflection.

The next step in the process was to answer three questions: the type of manipulation I wanted to explore further, what state of mind I hoped it would create and a verb to associate with it as a whole. My answers to those questions were: diffusion, a healing state of mind and to release.

From there I began to prototype different ways to diffuse light that also aligned with the rest of the concept. I began to sketch once I had an strong idea. The initial design included internal sliding shades that allowed the user a dimmed option, however I eventually decided to discard that detail due to time constraints.

Instead though, I chose to utilize light bulbs that had dimming capabilities. This decision resulted in a much cleaner end product and still achieved the goal of creating a lamp that aided in the practice of healing, releasing and relaxing.
